Before an orgasm, your body becomes increasingly excited. Breathing, heart rate and blood pressure increases, pupils of the eyes dilate, the lips of the mouth darken, the nipples become erect, the clitoris swells and becomes erect and exposed, much like the aroused penis. With more excitement, the skin becomes flushed and it begins to sweat. In the female, the labia, clitoris, vagina and pelvic organs enlarge in very much the same way as the aroused penis enlarges and becomes erect. Sometimes there is a plateau of excitement which is held for several minutes before you are about to orgasm.
Orgasm is the third phase of the sexual response cycle. It is the point at which all the tension is suddenly released in a series of involuntary and pleasurable muscular contractions that may be felt in the vagina and/or uterus (some women do experience orgasms without contractions). Both physical and psychological factors play a part in a woman's orgasm. But it's interesting to note that women don’t need to have their genitals stimulated in order to orgasm, some women can "come" simply by thinking about things that turn them on. Remember, every woman and her body are different. On a physical level, the orgasm is mostly concentrated around the clitoris, vagina and uterus.
Here's what's up with her body during the orgasmic phase:
- At the "peak" of pelvic vasocogestion (when blood rushes into the genitals) and muscle tension the blood flow reverses and releases tension
- Women often require continued stimulation before, up to and during an orgasm for it to fully occur -- and it's important to note that many heterosexual women take longer to reach orgasm than their male partners
- Rhythmic contractions of muscles around vagina and uterus -- usually three to seven contractions
- Opening of the cervix, called "os", opens slightly
- Rectal sphincter contracts
- Some women also experience other muscle contractions (like in their toes) and tingling sensations throughout their bodies
